Part of my evolving Rockpool series, this substantial one-of-a-kind signet ring was sand cast in sterling silver, with beach sand creating its richly textured surface.

The ring was originally cast with a raw garnet in place. Although the silver pour worked, the garnet cracked during the process. Rather than abandon the ring, I removed the damaged stone and replaced it with a handmade copper sphere, soldered securely into the original setting.

The warm copper against the rugged silver gives the ring a beautiful mixed-metal contrast—and a completely different character from the piece I originally imagined.

Made entirely by hand in my Sellicks Beach studio, the irregular texture and organic details are an intentional part of the design. There will never be another exactly like it.

Copper naturally develops a deeper patina over time. This can be left to evolve or gently brightened with a jewellery polishing cloth.
