Have a geologist friend or family member? Or someone who loves fossils or the patterns of nature? This is perfect. A useful bag that can carry lunch, a bottle of water and notebooks, a sketch book and gear or a present and a bunch of flowers. Or a geological pick and rock samples.
Ammonites are fossils known for their beauty, and are distantly related to modern sea shells. This pattern was designed by Jane MacDonald of Bebe Bold. The hand-stitching is in the Japanese style of sashiko and I chose to use a colourful variegated thread. To highlight the curves I then free-hand quilted around the shapes using my machine. The back is also quilted (in straight lines) as the quilting adds strength to the bag. The lining has cream-on-cream designs of leaves, acorns and branches.
The price you pay, minus packing and shipping, will be donated to WIRES, the Australian Wildlife Rescue Association.
The outer fabric is cotton and is heavier (and thus stronger) than the usual dress cotton fabrics. The panel is a cotton, and the lining is cotton. All sewing threads, and the padding, are cotton. As a result, the bag can be washed on cold in a washing machine and dried in the shade.
The bag is 31 x 26 x 8 cm and the straps are 49 x 4 cm.
