Description
Columbines (also known as Aquilegia meaning 'eagle's claws') come in lots of colours. The colour-change on the blue flowers just asked to be painted. Painting on black fabric allowed the flowers to shine colourfully. (The original flower photograph is included in the photos.)
Description: The bag will easily carry a few A4 books or the normal contents of a handbag. The front has painted flowers on black cotton fabric, with detailed quilting. The back has gold metallic trees - a commercial cotton fabric. The lining shows green leaves. All stitching is done with cotton threads. The wadding is cotton.
Technique: Draw or trace the flowers from the photographs then copy on to black fabric. Paint using acrylic fabric paint, leaving black outlines between areas. Iron once dry, to set the paint. Create a quilt sandwich (top, wadding, lining). Free-motion quilt around the flowers, in the black outlines. Then fill the rest of the space with quilting. Trim and make in to a bag (quilting the back sandwich), and include a special embroidery pattern on the handles. Some of the construction of the bag involved hand-sewing, as well as machine sewing.
Bag Details: The bag is 35 x 30 cm, and the handles are 49 x 4 cm, and have wadding to make them more comfortable. The bag is all cotton fabric and threads so can be washed in cold water and dried in the shade. Frequent washing may lead to a deterioration of the metallic tree pattern on the back. The painted flowers should not suffer.
