I’ve sewn 6 cm batik squares of pebbles, leaves, flowers and abstract designs into an eye-catching bag, large enough to fit the contents of a ‘green’ supermarket bag, or A4 folders and necessities for a day of study or a day out. Or any other shopping. I quilted the entire bag, inserting cotton wadding between the outer and the lining, to increase strength and possibly to help a little bit with insulation. Unlike supermarket bags, this is all cotton, including the wadding, the threads and the fabrics, and it can be washed repeatedly. The base and lining side panels show small leaves, while the main lining has autumn leaves. The handles, which are padded, are made of the same batik fabric as the binding.
The price you pay, minus packing and shipping, will be donated to WIRES, the Australian Wildlife Rescue Association.
The bag is 37 x 42 x 17 cm (on the outside) and the handles or straps are 37 x 4 cm. The bag can be carried without touching the ground by someone as short as 1.53 m (ie myself). Cold machine wash then dry in the shade is recommended. Iron on the cotton setting.
