A one-of-a-kind handbag that is made using upcycled scraps of denim jeans and lined with a beautifully bright pre-loved fabric sourced from Achieve Australia’s The Sewing Basket.

Designed and sewn by Katie in her home studio in the Sutherland Shire, NSW, this bag gives beautiful pre-loved materials a second life while helping reduce textile waste.

The Details

Outside

• Made with the scraps of denim from jeans used in other upcycling projects, in three shades of blue

• The scraps are cut into uniformly sized squares and arranged in a checkered pattern of light and dark

• Gusset to add sides and base

• Reinforced with Vlieseline Decovil Light interfacing for structure and shape

• External front slip pocket made from denim with a silver-toned magnetic snap to secure it closed

Inside

• Fully lined using a teal coloured second-hand fabric with a pattern of pink shapes in uniform lines

• Reinforced with Pellon SF101 woven fusible interfacing for added strength

• One internal zipper pocket, with a second hand pink coloured zipper and second hand pink fabric for the pocket lining

• One small internal slip pocket made from the lining fabric

Strap & Closure

• Made from a pair of light denim jeans

• Strap reinforced with a strip of stabiliser for added strength

• Silver toned magnetic snap closure to close the bag

Materials & Upcycling

The denim and fabric are both second-hand, the latter purchased from Achieve Australia’s The Sewing Basket, a social enterprise supporting people with disability.

New materials used are limited to stabilisers, metal hardware, thread and the cotton label.

All pre-loved textiles used in this bag are washed before being sewn.

By choosing pre-loved materials, this bag gives existing textiles a new purpose while helping reduce textile waste.
