Introducing Bek from 1:3 Art. Where every item is handmade!! From her home in Brisbane, Bek hand makes all of her amazing creations.
Find out why Bek started creating and why she is so passionate about the value of handmade.
Tell us about your creations and your handmade process.
I love creating, learning and experimenting. This leads me to try many, many different art forms! I love creating in ways that bring us closer to nature such as flowers, landscapes and gemstones. My current crafting experiments involve fluid art, watercolour painting and wire-wrapped gemstone jewellery. I mainly make jewellery because I think it’s lovely to be able to adorn yourself with nature’s beauty.
Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a handmade artist.
As a child I was artistic and creative, but as I grew into an adult, the element of ‘play’ was replaced with responsibilities. Professionally, in administrative and bookkeeping roles, my ‘left side’ logical brain was used more often than the right side.
This imbalance caused a lot of stress – all work and no play, as they say! Once I recognised this, I started to deliberately work ‘play’ – creativity and art – back into my world, to attempt to bring back the balance between the two sides of my brain. The joy and freedom art brings helps me to manage my chronic illness.
What is your inspiration or where do you find inspiration?
My inspiration mainly comes from the beauty of nature. As a Christian, I believe that God is the ultimate creator and He created nature to demonstrate His generosity and beauty. He could have created just one type of flower, or animal, or gemstone, but instead He created a multitude of each for us to discover and enjoy.
Being in nature makes me happy and connects me to God, and I recreate nature in my artwork to bring beauty and happiness to others.
Where did you learn your craft?
My crafts are a combination of self-taught, many hours of experimentation, and those who have created before me. I love that there are many talented people who have been generous enough to show their skills so that I can learn and build on their knowledge.
Why is handmade artistry so important to you?
I believe art and creativity is a way to connect to something deeper in our souls. It is healing and restorative, soothing and balancing. I think it’s not the end result that matters, but rather what happens to us during the process of creation by using our own two hands that is important and should be the focus of art.
Bek is a much loved member of the Madeit Collective, posting regularly in our Facebook Group ~ The Ultimate Artisan Gift Destination ~ and sharing her new creations as they are released. If you haven't connected with 1:3 Art already, make sure you join our FB Group and say hi!
