Tell us about your creations and your handmade process.
I handcraft handbags, wallets and accessories from high quality Portuguese cork. I use cork because it has so many amazing qualities: it’s lightweight, durable, water-resistant, and a natural alternative to leather. My pieces are designed for men and women, but they are especially ideal for those who are environmentally conscious and want to make mindful, eco-friendly choices.
Each piece begins with selecting the perfect pattern. I then choose the right piece of cork, lining fabric and bag hardware that will bring the pattern to life. From stitching the pieces together to adding stylish accents, each handbag is crafted with precision and care, paying close attention to detail in every step. The process is time intensive, but the result is a beautifully unique product that reflects my passion for craftsmanship and sustainability.
Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a handmade artist.
My bag making journey started during the Covid pandemic when, as a casual teacher with limited work, I stumbled upon a YouTube video on how to make a hand sanitiser pouch. Intrigued, I gave it a try.
From there, I practised with simple patterns to build my skills until I felt ready to tackle a handbag design. It was through these tutorials that I discovered cork, and the moment I worked with it, I knew I wanted to share its unique qualities with others. Its versatility and eco-friendly nature inspired me to focus on creating something truly special.
What is your inspiration or where do you find inspiration?
There are countless talented bag designers in Australia and worldwide, and whenever I come across a pattern that could be enhanced by using cork, I can’t resist buying it. I have an extensive collection of patterns, but I usually only make a couple before moving on to something new. Having crafted so many different bags, I now feel confident enough to modify the original designs. From altering the types of pockets to redesigning handles and straps, each of my handbags is truly one of a kind. Even if I make the same bag more than once, I always change up the colours or hardware to ensure each one is uniquely its own.
Where did you learn your craft?
I can’t quite remember exactly how I got into sewing, but I do recall buying a basic sewing machine in my early twenties and making a few clothes for myself. When I had children, I sewed a lot of their clothes when they were little, but once I started my university studies, I no longer had time to keep up with it.
For years, I didn’t sew at all, though I was always inspired by my mum. She used to make clothes for us as kids, sell at markets, and we especially treasured the quilts she lovingly created until her passing. Today, I’m fortunate to use my mum’s sewing machine to craft my handbags and accessories, carrying on a tradition that means so much to me.
Why is handmade artistry so important to you?
As an artisan, I believe that when you buy handmade goods, you’re investing in something crafted with care and attention to detail, resulting in higher quality and more durable items. Many handmade products are created using environmentally friendly materials, helping to reduce environmental impact. Buying handmade offers better value for money, it supports the preservation of traditional skills and provides opportunities for customization.
As an artisan, I’m constantly seeking ways to enhance my skills. Recently, I bought an industrial sewing machine, additionally, I work as a pattern tester for several international designers, which allows me to learn new techniques and gain inspiration from fellow testers across the globe.
