Coasters are made from genuine Australian stone found on our family fossicking trips around Australia. A large 'chunk' of stone is sliced into slabs using a lapidary slab saw. If the slice is of a specific size and has a lot of a beautiful colour and/or pattern, we will prepare it to become a coaster or a clock.
The surface of the rock slab is then ground on a vibrating flat lap, with varying grits as required, to smooth away saw marks and prepare the surface for polishing. After about a week of grinding it is then returned to the flat lap for another week to polish. Cork is glued to the rough back to provide cushioning and insulation between the coaster with a hot cup and the table.

Stone: Mount Magnet Jasper is extremely hard and dense, it takes a high-quality polish, making it highly sought after by lapidary enthusiasts and collectors. It is typically a siliceous, iron-rich rock, often classified as jaspillite or banded iron formation (BIF). The vivid red and orange colors come from iron oxides, while the darker spots are usually hematite or magnetite

Appearance: Specimens can range from deep, opaque red jasper to striking striped patterns. Some feature translucent quartz, black hematite, and beautiful contrasts of dark green, black, and red.
