Slab Clocks are made from genuine Australian stone found on our family fossicking trips around Australia. A large 'chunk' of stone is sliced into slabs using a lapidary slab saw. If the slice is of a specific size and has a lot of a beautiful colour and/or pattern, we will prepare it to become a coaster or a clock, larger and thicker slices generally become clocks because extra thickness is needed for the clock movement and spoke.
The slab is then ground on a vibrating flat lap, with varying grits as required, to remove saw marks and prepare the surface for polishing. It is then returned to the flat lap for polishing. Each phase in the flat lap takes about a week. A hole is then drilled through the center of the slab for the clock movement, number positions are marked using a Dremel drill and painted for clarity. A stainless steel stand is fashioned and bolted to the back of the movement and lastly, the hands are added to the movement spoke, they may be removed for shipping, you will be given instructions on how to attach them yourself.
