Slab Clocks are made from genuine Australian stone found on our fossicking trips around Australia. A large 'chunk' of stone is sliced into slabs using a lapidary slab saw. If the slice is of a specific size and has a lot of a beautiful colour and/or pattern, we will prepare it to become a coaster or a clock, larger and thicker slices generally become clocks because extra thickness and strength is needed for the clock movement and spoke.
The slab is then ground on a vibrating flat lap, with varying grits as required, to remove saw marks and prepare the surface for polishing. It is then returned to the flat lap for polishing. Each phase on the flat lap takes about a week. A hole is then drilled through the center of the slab for the clock movement, number positions are marked using a Dremel drill and painted for clarity. A stainless steel stand is fashioned and fitted to the back beneath the movement, and lastly the hands are pressed into the movement spoke, they may be removed for shipping, if so you will be given instructions on how to attach them yourself. The AA battery is not included.

Stone: Serpentine is a well-known gemstone in the world of gemology and avid crystal collector circles but tends to be more obscure to the general public.
-
Appearance: This mostly ornamental semi-precious stone appears in varying shades of green with visually striking veining patterns. Often confused with jade because of their similarities, serpentine belongs to an entirely different, unrelated series of minerals. Serpentine doesn’t refer to a single mineral but rather a large group of minerals. These serpentine minerals are all related, sharing similar compositions and forming through similar processes.
-
Location: This serpentine, without the purple Stichtite nodules often merged within the Tasmanian varieties, was found in Rosebery, Tasmania, further inland than the Serpentine and Stichtite sites aound Zeehan.
-
Care: Because of its low hardness, serpentine scratches easily and should be handled with care.
Movement: A press fit quartz clock movement with a sweeping (non-ticking) rotation. 1 x AA battery (not included)
Hands: Aluminum
Packaging:
Our clocks will be packaged in a cardboard box slightly bigger than it's dimension, and secured with bubble wrap to prevent damage. A cardboard buffer will surround the hands, if they haven't been removed for shipping, to keep them from bending under pressure from the packaging.
Your purchase will be prepared within the next 3 business days after purchasing, and sent by Australia Post. You will be provided with a tracking number which can be entered on the Australia Post app.
