My tiny studio in Hobart, Tasmania has been a hive of activity lately and I've been working on a specific polymer clay technique known as Mokume Gane. It's actually an ancient Japanese metalworking technique and when translated means “wood-grained metal”.
It has been adapted to be used with polymer clay and the result is amazing and original every time.
I take thin layers of clay, place them on top of each other and then use different tools to make marks and indents through them. I shave strips off the block of clay and lay them onto a piece of pre-rolled backing clay which is then smoothed by using a texture roller. I cut the out the shapes for the pieces. Then they are then baked, sanded and a top coat applied to add shine.
The shaped pieces are then finished into earrings or pendants by carefully choosing the right findings( the joining and silver/gold accent pieces and hook or stud).
Each piece of clay is original and I could never make a duplicate even if I wanted to. The making process is unique every time.
I use to quality ear wires and findings but if you have any sensitivities please ask and I can replace them with sterling silver or rolled gold for a small fee.
If you have any questions please reach out.
The photos show the size and dimensions.
Thanks for stopping by.
Have a great day,
Cate
