Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a handmade artist.
My journey began during a period when we were all spending more time at home. I've always had a passion for indoor plants and propagating them, and I had been improvising hangers to suspend my plants from the beams of our pitched ceiling. With extra time on my hands, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to learn how to make beautiful macramé hangers. After watching a few tutorials, I quickly became obsessed, and before I knew it, I had 33 hanging plants in my living room. That’s when I realized it was time to expand my creative horizons.
Already involved in markets and workshops teaching low-tox living, I started bringing my macramé pieces to sell at the markets and teaching others how to craft their own. Unfortunately, as uncertainty grew, the markets I participated in came to a halt. Around that time, I saw a post in a local Facebook group seeking expressions of interest for a local Art and Craft Collective.
The timing was perfect, allowing me to continue creating and be part of something amazing. We each had our own space in a retail outlet open six days a week, working together to sell each other’s creations. I met, learned from, and formed friendships with some incredible makers and artists, and I feel truly blessed to have been part of it.
Sadly, we recently had to close as the retail space was no longer available to us. However, we now have a monthly indoor market in Mudgeeraba every second Sunday of the month. Recently, I discovered Madeit, and I’m incredibly grateful to Leina and her incredible team. Thanks to this platform, I can now share my creations with people all across Australia.
What is your inspiration or where do you find inspiration?
My inspiration evolves as my crafting journey progresses. I enjoy crafting pieces that are both visually appealing and functional. I’m passionate about using driftwood I collect from local waterways, as well as incorporating plants and crystals. Custom designs and plant installations make my soul happy. Inspiration is all around us, ready to be discovered in the ordinary and the unique.
Where did you learn your craft?
I honed my craft by watching tutorials on YouTube and social media. While learning from books can be challenging for me, seeing someone demonstrate the knots made all the difference. I’m incredibly grateful to the talented crafters who share their skills in this way.
Why is handmade artistry so important to you?
Handmade artistry holds a special place in my heart because it allows me to pour my creativity, passion, and personal touch into each piece.
Unlike mass-produced items, handmade creations carry a unique story and a sense of individuality that resonates deeply with both the creator and the recipient.
For me, the process of crafting each piece is not just about creating something beautiful, but also about connecting with my materials, embracing imperfections, and celebrating the craftsmanship involved. Handmade artistry is a way for me to share a part of myself and contribute something meaningful to the world, reflecting my values and creativity in every piece I make.
