Insect Hotel for Native Bees and other beneficial insects

With bee populations in decline across Australia, insect hotels are a great way to provide habitat to encourage population growth to our much needed pollinators. Beneficial insects play a critical role in the garden ecosystem and providing habitat for them encourages biodiversity. Insects will use a hotel to hide from predators, rest, nest and take shelter from the rain etc. The more beneficial insects you have around results in less of the unwanted “pest” insects, so it’s an environmentally friendly way of controlling those pesky critters.

This handmade insect hotel has been created using reclaimed wood. The interior furnishings are pieces of bamboo, a couple of small logs (native plant species: Casuarina and Lemon Scented Tea Tree) and pieces of rolled up banana plant bark. The decorative exterior elements Ive made using small laser cutting waste off cuts.

Size: 17cm high, 9cm wide and 11cm deep.

Types of insects this hotel will attract are:

A variety of native bees such as Reed Bees, Masked Bees, Leaf Cutter Bees, Blue Banded Bees, Teddy Bear Bees and Resin Bees. As well as many other types of beneficial insects, including Lacewings, Native Stingless Wasps, Hoverflies and Lady Beetles.

Location! Location! Location!

The ideal location for the insect hotel is in a spot that’s protected from the rain and receives some sun. On a deck, balcony or patio is perfect.
