These are buttons that I carved from avocado pits.
The process involves cutting and shaping slices of the pit when it is fresh. At this stage the pit is still fairly soft. It takes 4 to 5 days for the slices to dry and become very hard. I can then drill the holes, give them a good sanding and finally rub them with oil for protection and to bring out the beautiful colours.
The buttons are very hardy and great for bags and pouches, journal covers, embellishments and other decorative purposes. Not so practical for clothes as the buttons soften in a washing cycle and take a long time to dry.
No two buttons are the same, they all have this "organic" look with lots of character.
I made the drawstring pouches with my hand dyed fabrics and added a stenciled motif. They are lined and can be used for other small items long after you have used all the buttons!
