These are buttons that I carved from avocado pits.
The process involves cutting and shaping slices of the pit when it is fresh. At this stage the pit is still fairly soft. It takes 4 to 5 days for the slices to dry and become very hard. I can then drill the holes, give them a good sanding and finally rub them with oil for protection and to bring out the beautiful colours.
The buttons are very hardy and great for bags and pouches, knitted beanies, journal covers, embellishments, caricatures and many other decorative purposes. It has even been suggested to make jewellery with them!
Not so practical for clothes that need washing as the buttons soften in a washing cycle. They take a long time to dry, and will then need oiling again.
No two buttons are the same, they all have this "organic" look with lots of character.
The buttons come on the card(s) of your choice. Each card costs the same but the number of buttons vary according to size.
I suggest you have a lot of fun with them :D)
I made the drawstring pouches with my hand dyed fabrics and added a stenciled motif. They are lined and can be used for other small items long after you have used all the buttons! They measure 9x12cm.
These bags are not included with the buttons, they can be added to your order for an extra $10.- each.
Note: The bags in these pictures are for sale elsewhere in my shop (at the time of writing).
