Australian Gecko handcrafted brooch made from wood, eco resin & glitter acrylic with safety brooch pin.
A gecko has been on my design ‘wishlist’ for a while and rather than doing something I’m sure I was supposed to be doing at the time I decided to create this instead. I had only designed the earrings when Mike (yep true story) said – that would look great as a brooch and here we are...
About Geckos:
There are more than 150 species of Geckos native to Australia – who knew ! (well obviously someone did or I wouldn’t have been able to find that out and tell you about it but still…).
They are a dab hand at blending into their surroundings. They like to snack on insects and invertebrates with some enjoying a tipple of nectar to go with their feast.
They can be noisy little fellows favouring a vocal range that includes clicks, barks, squeaks and the odd chirp.
They certainly don’t need a phone torch as they can see brilliantly at night – they can even see colours and I’d say they prefer night time anyway since they don’t have eyelids. They lick their eyes to clean them instead of the traditional blinking - nice twist !
If they are concerned about any predatory behaviour nearby they just drop their tail and get the flock out of there, with most of them able to grow a new one.
Why Brooches ?
So it's a thing again right ! Brooches have come a long way since the Cameo your grandma used to wear. And a lot of people aren't getting their ears pierced these days...so...
Enter the modern era of the must-have accessory.
Yep - the BROOCH IS BACK baby and it's funkier than ever !
After quite a few enquiries in the shop as to whether we carry brooches, well let's just say "challenge accepted !"
I put on my design hat, and over the next few months created my own take on the once humble brooch, a range of beautiful, colourful and (if I don't say so myself) pretty stylish yet fun brooches featuring Australian Flora and Fauna (and a few other plants and animals that I couldn't resist).
And you know what...I have actually started wearing them myself and I must say I am starting to feel a bit naked without one.
The designs are cut on our own own laser cutter out of Australian made 'no-nasties' ply and locally sourced acrylic. They are then handpainted, hand dome cast using Australian made plant-based bio-resin.
