Introducing Ric from Woodwork in Rics Shed. Where every item is handmade!! From his home in Rockingham Beach, WA, Ric uses as much recycled timber and natural Australian wood as possible to create unique and bespoke items.
Find out why Ric started creating and why he is so passionate about the value of handmade.
Tell us about your creations and your handmade process.
The handmade process is central to everything I do: cutting shaping, assembling, and finishing each item with care so that no two pieces are ever exactly the same. I enjoy the challenge of creating and making unique pieces.
Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a handmade artist.
My journey as a handmade artist started with a simple love of making things. What began as experimenting and creating for fun soon became a bit of an obsession. I've learnt by doing-through trial, error, and lots of time at the workbench. Every piece I make carries a bit of that journey - real, imperfect, and made with care.
What is your inspiration or where do you find inspiration?
My inspiration comes from the wood itself-its grain, knots and imperfections. I like letting the material guide me, shaping each piece so it keeps a bit of its natural character.
The process isn't always perfect, but that's what makes each creation real and one of a kind.
Where did you learn your craft?
I'm self-taught. I learned my craft by diving in, experimenting, making mistakes, and figuring things out with my own hands. Every project has taught me something new, and I'm still learning with each piece I create.
Why is handmade artistry so important to you?
For me, handmade means honest. With wood, no two pieces are the same, and I enjoy that. I get a lot out of turning rough timber into something useful and unique. And I love the positive feedback that customers give me.
Ric is a much loved member of the MadeIt Collective, posting regularly in our Facebook Group ~ The Handmade Marketplace of Australia ~ and sharing their new creations as they are released. If you haven't connected with Woodwork in Rics Shed, make sure you join our FB Group and say hi !
