Wheel thrown & hand built ceramic pieces, made in Currumbin.
Loosely translated (In a literal sense), Terra Kiah for me means 'clay creations from a beautiful place'.
TERRA: Latin: ‘earth, land’
KIAH: Aboriginal Australia: ‘from the beautiful place, or a beautiful place'
Terra (earth) i.e: Terra Cotta: unglazed earthenware used for pottery. Terra Firma in reference to solid earth. Terra Mater' - another name for Mother Earth or Gaia.
In Welsh culture Kiah is said to mean Person Of Earth; connected to nature, earthly elements and representing a close bond with the land. Those named Kiah are believed to embody qualities such as stability, reliability, and groundedness - often seen as nurturing, caring individuals who have a deep respect for the environment.
In the Irish tradition, Kiah can be associated with concepts of beauty or strength. In some Native American languages, Kiah can symbolize elements of earth, spirituality, or harmony with nature. The name might also have different interpretations in various African cultures where it could connote characteristics like resilience, wisdom, or connection to the land.”
The intrinsic essence of these words resonates deeply within me. I intentionally enjoy a life that is quite simple and earthy, which I like to think infuses into my ceramic pieces.
As I develop as a ceramicist I would love to experiment more in sourcing wild clay, and wood kiln firing along with other natural firing techniques such as Raku and Saggar.
The name Kiah has diverse pronunciation and spelling variants depending on geographic and cultural influences. It is often pronounced “Kia or Kea” though my preference for Terra Kiah Ceramics is to pronounce it "Kaiya” or “Kyah”.
