Enamelling copper and silver usually require a layer of counter enamel to be applied on the back of the piece. This is to ensure the enamel will not crack or chip when the item is cooling as there is different expansion and contraction rates between the enamel and what it is being fused to.
Counter enamel is an enamel blend usually a mix of many colours and look grey speckled but this can vary. (It's enamel gathered from other work while sifting dry enamel on the front).

ENAMEL CARE
I recommend you store your jewellery pieces separately so that they do not wear on each other. Avoid contact with water, cream, soap etc and remove your jewellery while washing dishes, cleaning or bathing etc.
CLEANING
It's best to use soft, dry cleaning materials to clean your enamel jewellery.
If the silver setting has begun to oxidize you can polish it with a silver cloth until it has regained their lustre.

What is Enamel?
Enamel is primarily fused opaque and or transparent coloured Glass.
The art of enamelling is fusing glass to metal, most commonly copper and silver.

I handcraft each piece in my studio in a small rural town called Millicent, South Australia. I have an area for designing, preparing the copper and or silver. An area for preparing and applying the enamel and an area to fuse the enamel by either torch firing or a kiln.

The standard process involves sifting multiple layers of dry enamel powder or wetting the enamel with water and apply onto the copper or silver piece and firing it layer by layer to temperature, around 800°C, each piece usually has 3-4 layers but sometimes many more layers and firings are needed depending on the complexity of the intended design and the colours chosen. The results are often predictable or breathtakingly unpredictable.

Once firing is complete and cooled, it will need to be inspected for any faults, ground back, refired, cleaned and polished before it's ready for its final check, because of the nature of molten glass, different melting temperatures for each coloured opaque or transparent enamel, no two pieces will be the same.

From time to time I also create a limited number of handmade Silver pieces, some of my enamel pieces are also fused on silver. I use both Sterling and Fine Silver to create beautiful pieces in many different styles.

Enjoy.
