I can’t remember when I first learnt how to knit, crochet, sew and make. Growing up in a small country town in Tasmania, I was always surrounded by my Mother, Grandmothers and Aunties making things. I loved the school holidays, because I could get out the garbage bag of wool scraps and knitting needles and crocheting hooks. As a child I thought I was born in the wrong era. Why couldn’t I be born when I would be allowed to knit and sew all day? Now, approaching 50 and living in the big smoke I realise how lucky I am that I get to create things because I want to, not because I have to as a chore. But it saddens me that these skills are becoming lost, and it breaks my heart to see the ease with which people replace things, and the attitude of just throw it away… I love to repurpose, upcycle, regenerate. Call it what you will. I collect clothes destined for landfill because they are no longer the favourite in the wardrobe, and someone needs more space for their new clothes. I cut them, sew them and embellish them to make something that people will want again, something they will love again.
