Tell us about your creations and your handmade process.
I make a wide range of handmade accessories, including pouches, wallets and small bags to large duffle bags and my incredibly practical wet bags! I'm a perfectionist when it comes to quality - if something has even the tiniest flaw, it's back to the drawing board! One of the things I enjoy most is discovering new patterns and sourcing beautiful fabrics. Lately, I've loved incorporating Portuguese cork into my wallets and smaller pouches. It has such a luxurious feel and the range of colours available is simply stunning. On a recent trip to Europe, I found some beautiful linen in a local market in Sicily!
Most of my creations are sewn on my Pfaff sewing machine, which help me achieve a very high standard of finish. There are some details that are still completed entirely by hand - for example, when I use contrasting bias binding on my Trixie pouches, each stitch is carefully sewn by hand to give a beautiful, professional finish. Every item is made with great attention to detail, combining quality materials, thoughtful design and craftsmanship to create pieces that are both beautiful and functional.
Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a handmade artist.
My eldest sister, Margot, is very creative and inspired me to start sewing when I was fourteen years old. I've been hooked ever since! After returning home from living in the UK for ten years, I decided to try making a quilt. I enjoyed the process so much that I began creating quilts for family and friends and it soon became a cherished tradition. What started as a single project quickly grew into a passion.
I loved the creativity, the craftsmanship and the joy that a handmade quilt could bring to someone special.
Looking to expand my creative skills, I took a different direction and began making bags and pouches, discovering a passion for creating pieces that were both practical and beautifully crafted. What started as a creative outlet quickly grew into something much more. I loved every aspect of the process, from selecting materials and experimenting with different techniques to refining patterns and perfecting the finishing details. With each project, my skills and confidence grew and I found great satisfaction in transforming simple materials into functional, handcrafted pieces.
As my collection of handmade bags and pouches grew, so did the encouragement from those around me. Friends and family were enthusiastic about my work and my very close friend Nicole suggested that I start selling my creations through my own website. It was an idea I hadn't seriously considered before, but the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to try it. What had begun as a personal creative journey had the potential to reach a much wider audience. That encouragement gave me the confidence to take the next step and share my work online. Building my own website allowed me to showcase my creations, connect with customers and turn my passion into something more meaningful. As my business grew, I was extremely proud to be accepted as a Verified Artisan on Madeit, Australia's handmade marketplace. Being part of a community that celebrates creativity, craftsmanship and small business has been an incredibly rewarding experience.
I was also thrilled to see my products reach retail, with my best-selling wet bags now stocked at Cuba St Coffee Roasters on the Sunshine Coast - my very first Australian stockist! Closer to home, I'm delighted that a local kindergarten recommends my website to incoming families each year, helping connect my handmade creations with a wider community. What began as a creative outlet has evolved into a business that allows me to share my handmade creations with customers across Australia. Every bag and pouch I make reflects my commitment to quality, functionality and thoughtful design and I look forward to continuing this journey for many years to come.
What is your inspiration or where do you find inspiration?
I come from a large family and I love making handmade gifts for them all. I'm always drawn to beautiful and unique fabrics and I enjoy turning them into something meaningful and personal. When I'm in Toowoomba, I attend a weekly sewing group at my local fabric and quilting shop, Precious Time Fabric and Quilts. The group also works on an annual project making quilts for a Brisbane hospital supporting children with chronic heart disease. Last year, we made 137 quilts for the HeartKids charity. Each quilt is chosen by a child for their health journey and they can then take it home. It's incredibly rewarding to be part of something that brings comfort to families in such a meaningful way.
Most of all, I'm inspired by the joy of creating something unique and personal for the people I love. There is something very special about giving a handmade gift, knowing each piece is made with care and tells its own story.
Where did you learn your craft?
I learnt to sew as a teenager and I have always loved using my hands creating, whether it was sewing or trying my hand at pottery, calligraphy, jewellery or quilling! While travelling in Chile last year, I visited a market in Valparaíso where I came across a weaving stall. I asked if I could try it and the weaver warmly invited me to sit at her loom. I was instantly drawn to the process.
Since returning home, I've purchased two looms and have begun to learn to weave. It has been one of the most challenging crafts I've ever tried but also one of the most rewarding. Weaving has naturally complemented my sewing and quilting practice, deepening my understanding of texture, structure and materials. Across all my creative work - from quilts to bags and now weaving - I continue to develop my skills with great enthusiasm, dedication and a strong appreciation for handmade craftsmanship.
Why is handmade artistry so important to you?
Creativity is a truly empowering experience for me. My studio is my happy place, where creating with my own hands brings me great joy and a deep sense of achievement. Many of my handmade pouches are one-off designs, making each piece unique - part of the beauty is knowing there will never be another made in exactly the same combination. Precision is extremely important to me, as I take great pride in the quality of my workmanship.
Handmade pieces are inherently unique, and I believe all artisans on MadeIt share a similar passion for craftsmanship, care, and creating something meaningful and lasting. I am both proud and humbled to be part of a community that values handmade work so deeply and I feel privileged to contribute my own creations to it!
