Introducing Vicki from All the little potters. Where every item is handmade!! From her workshop in Mid Coast, New South Wales, Vicki creates every piece by hand - handmade ceramics bursting with character, colour, and heart.
Find out why Vicki started creating and why she is so passionate about the value of handmade.
Tell us about your creations and your handmade process.
I am an artist and potter who enjoys creating unique, one of a kind pieces.
Each piece is thrown on the wheel, hand painted with original designs, glaze and fired.
Many of my pieces are also hand carved, adding an extra dimension and depth to the artwork.
Tell us a bit about your journey to becoming a handmade artist.
I have been an artist for as long as I can remember, originally focusing on two dimensional work such as painting and drawing. By trade, I am an interior designer and teacher, and over time my passion for art has naturally evolved to include product design.
I now create functional pottery pieces with an artistic twist, bringing together my love of design, creativity and hands on making.
What is your inspiration or where do you find inspiration?
I am inspired by my surroundings, particularly colour and the natural world. Much of my work draws on elements of nature, especially animals and plants, which are my favourite subjects to paint on pottery.
Outside of pottery, I have a passion for painting portraits, and this often carries through into my ceramic pieces, where I incorporate hand painted faces into my designs.
Where did you learn your craft?
I began my journey by undertaking a pottery class in hand-building, followed by a separate class in wheel throwing. It was during this time that I truly fell in love with the craft and quickly became hooked. I have been fortunate to learn (and to continue learning) from highly skilled teachers with over 40 years of experience, and their knowledge and practice continue to shape my own practice.
Why is handmade artistry so important to you?
In a world surrounded by mass production, I believe it is important to create unique, one of a kind pieces. There is something special about owning an item that has been made slowly by hand, with care, time and skill.
I value the connection to the maker and the appreciation of the knowledge behind each piece. For me, handmade artistry helps to centre us and ground us in what is real.
Vicki is a much loved member of the MadeIt Collective, posting regularly in our Facebook Group ~ MadeIt: Handmade not Massmade Australia ~ and sharing her new creations as they are released.
