A wooden Scottish kitchen tool dating from the 15th century, used to stir porridge, soups and, stews.
The rod shape means porridge can be stirred without congealing and forming lumps, with a low surface area to stop the porridge sticking, and a flat base for scraping the bottom of the saucepan. The shape of the handle resembles a Scottish thistle.
This Spurtle was turned on my lathe, from a piece of Australian Blackwood, and finished in a food safe oil.
