Meet 'Joey' - a tender digital portrait capturing the sweet, wide-eyed innocence of a rescued kangaroo joey. Behind this artwork lies a deeply personal history: having spent many years assisting in animal and wildlife rescues, I have rescued many little joeys over my time, watching them grow strong under the care of of many different Carer's, before returning them safely to the wild. This piece is a tribute to one of those special little ones.
Every brushstroke in this piece was crafted digitally using my Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet- a professional screen-tablet that allows me to draw and paint directly on the display surface, blending the natural feel of traditional drawing with digital precision.
My process always begins in the physical world: I make unique, hand-painted marks on paper, scan them in, and convert them into custom digital brushes. From there, the artwork is built up patiently in layers. When I explain this to people unfamiliar with digital art, I describe it much like working with transparent sheets of paper—each colour is painted onto its own separate transparent layer using my Cintiq pen. As the details and colours build, the layers are gradually flattened into a single, cohesive image, resulting in rich depth, texture, and vibrance.
