Handmade Process
The pieces begin with a clean ostrich eggshell canvas.
You can recognize this shell by the porous spots that distinguish them from other eggshells.
Pencil guidelines are drawn for each design, then the designs are "written" with melted beeswax that flows through a funnel-like pen called a "kistka". The wax masks the colour of the shell. The egg is then dipped in dye and that colour is then covered with beeswax. Layer by layer each colour is covered till the desired design is completed. Then the wax is removed by either candle flame or a heat gun. The pieces are then carefully cut with a diamond cutting wheel and shaped and sanded to smooth any rough edges. Each piece is signed by the artists hand and the UV Epoxy resin is then coated on the backs first, then the front. Components to make the earrings, pendants and rings are then added to complete each piece. No pieces are identical as they are individually handmade and written. There may be imperfections as the eggshell has a life of its own when it takes the dyes and their natural shapes.
This process is an ancient traditional Ukrainian artform that is highly respected.
They are known as "Pysanky" which comes from the word "pysaty" which then translates to "written" which is why the patterns and symbols are written with a kistka funnel pen tool and not painted.
