Cold process soap (CPS) is the most traditional soap making method. This technique involves combining oils and butters with a lye solution, which triggers a natural chemical reaction called saponification. During this process, the oils transform into soap and naturally produce glycerine, a skin-loving humectant.
In commercial soap, the glycerine is stripped out and sold as a separate product. This is why commercial bar soaps are so drying on the skin. This is not the case with CPS.
The salt bars are made with 100% coconut oil. Generally a soap made only with coconut oil will be very drying and these are often found in laundries rather than the bathroom. They are surprisingly really good for the skin. This is because we employ a technique called 'super fat' in the process. This means that not all of the oil is turned into soap. The rest is transformed, so not greasy like the original oil, but still present to act as a moisturiser on the skin.
There are two very distinct groups of customers who love this soap: people who get very grubby - mechanics, gardeners, sticky fingered toddlers; and people who have skin conditions – cracking skin, skin that stays moist in folds, acne, psoriasis etc.
