The pond lily, or water lily, is also known as the lotus, and has been a popular flower in many religious traditions and cultures dating back to the Egyptians and symbolized purity of heart during Victorian times. To some it was also a symbol of resurrection because many of the lily species close their flowers at night and reopen in the morning. It is also seen as a symbol of enlightenment because of the beautiful bloom that is pure and white, yet emerging from the mud and water.
