Shirley RM Pottery

To hold a piece of clay in your hands is evocative and reminiscent of childhood days of forming masterpieces and making mud pies.

I am a rustic, hand building ceramic artist operating from a home-based studio in the north east of Tasmania at Bridport.

My love of working with clay began in the late 1990’s and completing a Diploma of Art Craft and Design in 2006. Further study was Arts Administration and a master’s degree in Contemporary Art Practices.

I have sold my work through local markets and art galleries across the north and north east of Tasmania.

My work is across the spectrum of clays from Buff Raku Trachyte (BRT) to mid-fire and stoneware clays along with slip cast clay to add other dimensions.

The beautiful natural effect and roughness of the BRT is very popular in contemporary ceramics. This can be used on its own or glazed. I enjoy making planter pots and bases with this clay that can be used either inside or outdoors.

For the stoneware, mid-fire and slip clays I create both functional and non-functional works, including decorations and flower, bowls, vases, mugs and nativity scenes.
