marylounugent_handprinted

I am a practicing artist living on the lands of the Walbunga people of the Yuin Nation. I’ve been involved in artistic practice in all its forms throughout my life, and in particular textile surface design, even though other pursuits and interests (and paid work) interrupted my creative trajectory.

I studied Textile Design at RMIT in Melbourne before completing a Graduate Diploma in Art Secondary Teaching at Sydney Teachers College and lived for 15 years in central Australia, where I was engaged in various art endeavors both in and around Alice Springs. In the late 90s we moved with our (then) young family to Canberra where I completed my post graduate studies with a Degree in Curating and Art History at the ANU and worked at the National Gallery of Australia. In 2024 I left the National Gallery after 20 years. Now based in Braidwood, I feel grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with my artistic roots, reignite my creative appetite, and hopefully cultivate a fulfilling artistic practice.

I enjoy working with textiles. I design, carve and print my own Lino block printed fabric and also use stencil cut screen printing techniques. From these fabrics I make home wares including tea-towels, table runners and cushion covers. I also make one-off lamps and handmade cards. I print at home in our 100-year-old cottage here on Yuin Country where I live with my partner, an aging collie dog and three chooks with occasion visits from our grown-up kids. I love gardening and I'm very involved with the local Braidwood arts group. We are enjoying our new life here in Braidwood it's a fun town, people are kind, generous and friendly, traits that mean a lot in a small town (or anywhere!).
