This one of a kind little desert basket is handwoven using hundreds of cured longleaf pine needles, dyed with black tea so that they have a slightly darker sunburnt tone to represent the sunburnt landscape of the Northern Territory of Australia. The basket is stitched together using off-white, yellow ochre, orange and red iron ochre, as well as grey and black sinew – matching the colours found in the desert. Woven in the heart of this basket is a Rosetta stone, which reminds me of this harsh rugged desert landscape of the NT.

In the middle of this basket, I began by stitching with a colour that relates the stone, to form a connection with the heart of the basket – a Native American ideology. Weaving up and outwards, the story changes to the darker iron ochre tones found in the Australian desert, and finishing it off with black sinew, to represent the Outback skies.

In terms of the shape, it was woven like a Native American-style canoe shaped basket – an homage to Indigenous weaving from my two home countries (birth and surrogate).

Woven around the outside walls of the basket, I have woven four of my handmade Southern Ice Porcelain Frangipani leaf beads, on the North, South, East and West walls of the basket to represent the four winds, and are held in place by Labradorite beads to match the dark undertones found in the stone. In Native American culture, Nilch'i (the wind), is a living force, a god-like Spirit, a messenger and communicator between all living things.

Although delicate, it has been sealed with beeswax and clear lacquer for durability, and comes with a hemp hook so it can also hang on the wall

Dimensions 6 cm tall x 16.5 cm diameter (2.4 inches tall x 6.5 inches diameter).

Three-four weeks in the making and estimating a minimum of 30-40 hours of work to complete it, to give you an idea of how much time was involved in weaving this basket.

Some countries have restrictions on what can be sent in the post in terms of plant based products. I can check the Australia Post International Guide, however, there is still a risk they may not make it through. As a secure measure, until I have tested sending some baskets in the post to friends around the world, the only countries I know where they have made it through are: AUSTRALIA and CANADA (currently investigating the USA and Europe)

For larger baskets, Express shipping will be calculated accordingly to your postcode. Please contact me for a quote.

Happy shopping and thank you for keeping art and the handmade alive!
