These wooden boxes were made in the 19th century by rural American Shaker religious communities to store their household items, in much the same way as we use plastic boxes today.

The side of the box is made from a single strip of very thin timber, softened in hot water, so it can be wrapped round an oval mold and fastened with tiny copper tacks. Once this is dry it is attached to the base or top with small wooden pegs.

To give my "Shaker" boxes an Australian flavour I have used recycled River Red Gum for the top and bottom and White Pine for the sides.

The outside of the box is polished with shellac, wax and elbow grease.
