Designer Spotlight: Kylie and Melissa from Coco & Ella Designs
visit storeWe are sisters, Kylie and Melissa. We began Coco & Ella Designs in January 2011, and shortly after we discovered Made It and have been selling on Made It ever since. We had busy corporate careers as a Graphic Designer and Marketing Manager and wanted a change of pace so we started Coco & Ella Designs to follow our passion for all things to do with design, and for Kylie to be able to work from home to be with her three kids, Mia (6), Lucas (4), and Elise (2).
Melissa moved to the Gold Coast for a sea-change and Kylie is based in Sydney. We are both animal lovers; Melissa has a Cocker Spaniel named Coco, and Kylie, a border collie x cattle dog named Ella (hence our name!), and a new addition, Moka the 7-month old, 37kg, chocolate Labrador!
Coco & Ella Designs is our full time job, which we absolutely love. We are also a graphic design studio, servicing small businesses by designing logos and marketing material etc.
Living so far apart, our workspaces are in our own homes. Kylie has a space set up in her living area, (as pictured) where she looks after the marketing and sales side of the business and can keep an eye on the kids close by. Melissa has recently moved into a new home and is in the process of setting up her new home studio, with plans for a vision board for design inspiration, larger desk space and a packing and postage station, which is exciting.
Interior design is one of our biggest inspirations. We love keeping up with the latest trends in interior design and decor products. Most of our designs are based around spaces we like and we try to imagine what we would put in the space to complement the style. This also translates to our wedding vows and keepsake print range. While keeping to a simple, modern design to allow the wedding vows be the main focus, we try to incorporate a modern design element in the range to suit interior trends.
As a kid Melissa was always designing and creating things for our home and the bedroom we shared, without knowing it could one day become a career path. At a young age Melissa would enjoy making place cards for our family Christmas dinner, designing her own school book covers, making name labels for her homework books and taking on jobs (for free) to make stickers for her classmates’ homework books as well.
Melissa entered a lot of design competitions throughout primary school, such as a ‘Swatch Watch’ competition, which she won by designing a new watch for the range. Melissa also entered a book-writing competition and won 1st place for ‘Best Picture Book’ without even realising it was a category. From then on she knew her career path was to design, and once she had finished her qualifications, she also spent some time in the United States as a Graphic Designer for Buck’s Rock Creative and Performing Arts Camp.
Melissa finds it therapeutic to design and create with her hands. It is her way of tuning out and taking time to relax. Kylie’s kids enjoy seeing the designs we create and Mia loves to give feedback on the kids’ print range and gets involved creating when making things by hand. We love the feedback we get from clients who really appreciate the personal details on the custom keepsake prints, and this motivates us to keep designing.
We find Made It has a fantastic handmade community, the sellers group on Facebook are so supportive of one another. Also, being an Australian selling platform, we love how we can reach our local customers better than some other platforms, where we can tend to get lost in the crowd. We are looking forward to another exciting year with Made It, and enjoying the networking opportunities this community brings.
