French-born Sydney-sider with a penchant for personal details, Soraya: ‘I want to help people in gifting more than generic gifts to their loved ones’

I am Soraya from My Bebe Cadum, creator of personalised tote bags, zipper bags and mugs.

I have recently re-opened my Madeit store in April this year, but I initially started in 2014 selling baby clothes, hence the name My Bebe Cadum; a French expression for Chubby Baby.

I was born and raised in Paris (with a Moroccan background) and moved 14 years ago with my husband in Sydney (yes, I still have a very strong French accent). We have now 2 daughters both born in Australia and we are still visiting our family in France 5 weeks every year.

Thursdays and Fridays are my production days (my favourite days!). I own several printers, cutting machines and heat presses to my husband's despair.

I print all my items in my studio (aka my little city apartment) in Sydney.

My goal is to one day own a creative studio where I could work with a team but for now, I love to be able to work from home, pick-up the girls from school, and work again a little more if needed, … and yes, the husband is totally on board and is helping occasionally.

I have worked in the corporate world (and still do part-time) for 20 years and never thought of myself as creative, but on maternity leave far from my family, I had to do something with my hands. I learned to sew, to knit and discovered the handmade world and Madeit. I fell in love and opened a store, the rest is history.

Applying personalised designs using a range of press machines: ‘Being able to support and be supported by Aussie makers and Aussie buyers is an amazing feeling’

I want to help people in gifting more than generic gifts to their loved ones, by offering a range of handcrafted accessories that can be customised to the littlest details.

Most of us get to see family and friends only on special occasions, and a thoughtful gift that is also useful can definitely help keep the bond tight.

I always found handmade special, as opposed to mass produced products, you can feel the time and the love a maker took for every piece.

I am so glad to be part of the Madeit community; shop local is one of my mottos and being able to support and be supported by Aussie makers and Aussie buyers is an amazing feeling.
