Linen lovin’ fashion designer, Julie: “I now specialise in pure linen garments as I love the timeless look, natural feel and drape of beautiful linen fabric.”

I’m Julie and I’m the face behind the label, AnnieGeorgina. I design and sew women’s clothing and have been a Madeit seller since 2011, (I celebrate 7 years this August).

I live with my ever-supportive husband Mark, here on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Queensland.

My workspace at times can pretty much take over most of our home! When things are busy and I’m putting together a new range, there’s fabric, patterns, mannequins and general sewing mess spread throughout a number of rooms. It’s rarely as tidy as the picture represents!!

My faithful old Janome sewing machine that I bought way back when I was just 17 after having saved for years… is still going strong, not missing a beat! I still have my very first commercial sewing pattern that I used to sew shorts in Year 8 Home Ec.

I like to reminisce and look through my huge box of old patterns and fondly remember the clothes I made with them over the years. Like many sew-ists I have a mountain of fabric that I’ve stashed, including some very old pieces from my mother’s collection. I spend a lot of time seeking fabric suppliers who can provide exactly the right colour and quality linen that I’m looking for.

My range of clothing has evolved over the years and I now specialise in pure linen garments as I love the timeless look, natural feel and drape of beautiful linen fabric. I enjoy designing a range of styles that are both currently on trend as well as ones that are classic and will easily fit into any woman’s wardrobe.

I particularly spend a lot of time considering styles that are flattering to many different women’s shapes and make my clothes to fit sizes X Small – XX Large. I occasionally like to embellish some of my designs with hand embroidery, which complements linen perfectly.

Ever since I was a little girl I’ve loved to sew and I have a heritage of exceptionally artistic and creative family members. I named my clothing business AnnieGeorgina after my Danish great grandmother, in honour of the wonderful women in my family.

After completing high school back in the 80s, I studied and became a Home Economics teacher, which gave me great opportunity to learn about textiles, refine my pattern making and develop advanced sewing skills. I have many years of sewing experience and thoroughly enjoy this creative outlet. I still teach part-time but now as a support teacher in a primary school setting and hope to foster children’s creativity and love of art and craft.

The true value of handmade items should never be underestimated. The care, passion and perseverance that goes into any hand-crafted item will never be fully appreciated by anyone other than the creator. How do you put a price on that?

I love to support Australian handmade as much as possible and enjoy knowing that it’s helping a fellow hand-maker do something they love too.

I love Madeit and am totally committed to the ethos behind the site. I am so grateful for the start that Madeit gave me, which has allowed my passion to be taken to the wider public and I am so thankful to those who have supported AnnieGeorgina over the years.
