My Name is Kawsar and I am the founder and designer at KokoLakshan. I create handmade jewellery and accessories and have somehow also branched out to candles and soaps. I started making jewellery back in 2018 to disconnect from the rollercoaster ride that is life and immediately fell in love with the process of losing myself to colours, textures, and various tools to create beautiful pieces of jewellery.
My creative journey began working with beading designs and has expanded to working with resin, polymer clay, soy candle wax, soap bases and so much more. When I was thinking about transforming my designs into a brand to share with other people it was important that my ideologies were reflected in my business.
I wanted KokoLakshan to encourage people to be confident in themselves and their own sense of style. I want them to strive for their best self in whatever way was valuable to them and I want them to look and feel fabulous while doing so.
Finding out about the Madeit platform was such a vital opportunity to help me transform my hobby into a business. I started listing on Madeit in April 2020 and was inspired by the fact that they promote fellow Aussie creators and businesses. At times it can be hard to stand out against a global market.
I love that handmade products bring together creative communities via different events and platforms. The way that each handmade product is a work of art in its own form. It also helps that the creative process can be extremely meditative.
The KokoLakshan designs are heavily inspired by fantasy and imagination. I love to read fantasy stories and am currently reading a few by some local Aussie authors. The magic, romance and passion they explore ignites some new ideas for my designs and draws me back to creating each time. My inspiration also comes from my family, it is their positive feedback and excitement about my designs that has kept me creating over the last few years.
I have been blessed to have the support of my hubby, who helps with my product photographs as this is definitely not one of my own strengths and often use my mum and sisters to help try out my new candles and soaps.
I create my pieces from my home in Western Sydney whenever I’m not working on health projects or hanging out and acting silly with my lovely family. My creative process involves completely losing myself to my imagination and my crafting tools. I’ll often pick a type of jewellery or accessory that I’m interested in making and rummage through my crafting supplies to bring out a few options to work with. When I think more about the design I often start with colour- what colours am I drawn to? What colours would look nice together?
I’ll work with an idea in my head to piece everything together and make changes along the way. Sometimes the imagination can go beyond my crafting skills but with each new design I develop and improve new skills.
Like most creators, the biggest reward for my work is when another person is excited to buy and wear my designs. There may also be a little happy dance afterwards.
