Hi my name is Ric and I’m the craftsman behind Woodwork in Ric’s Shed.
Currently I work in the mining industry in the north of Western Australia which I enjoy, but my true enjoyment - when I am not travelling the world or seeing our beautiful home state in our caravan - is my weekends working with wood in my shed.
I am a family man who has been married for 37 years to my lovely wife Robyn and together we have four beautiful children who we are lucky enough to have living within five minutes of our home. This makes visiting with our growing number of grandchildren very easy.
My grandfather was a cabinet maker and I remember helping him with many projects in his workshop. This nurtured my initial interest in wood. To this day we still have a mid-century modern sideboard and some coffee tables he made in our home.
Our son also has inherited a keen interest in woodworking and has his own online business selling bespoke pepper and salt grinders.
All my life I have been experimenting with wood and steel and have made many unique items with both these materials including an outdoor bar for my own patio, one of a kind driftwood art work and driftwood accessories for my home, salvaged from local beaches.
I love the process of choosing a piece of wood and turning it into something beautiful. I feel my job is to highlight the natural grain and characteristics of each unique piece of wood to the best of my ability.
Learning new woodworking techniques and experimenting with design and form makes me feel happy and fulfilled.
I gain a lot of pleasure from people using and appreciating my creations. Madeit has provided us with the opportunity to market my pieces to a wider audience who have an appreciation for Australian made products and specialised craftsmanship.
I enjoy problem solving and working from requests to make bespoke items. My children and family have all benefited from my skills by having handmade cots, children’s play tables, and other furniture such as the beautiful bespoke clock I made for my daughter with wood we chose together. I now recreate this item with interesting and varied native timbers to create special, one-of-a kind pieces for my store.
