Making Your Social Media ‘Shoppable’, Part 3: Tagging Products on Facebook

Whether you’re sharing customer content, images from events, collaborations, or photoshoots, when your products are featured in your Facebook posts, the value of being able to provide product details and a seamless link to your online store so that consumers of that post can easily become customers is an obvious win for small businesses.

And that’s exactly what is offered by Facebook’s product tagging feature, another great benefit to using a Facebook Catalog (if you don’t know about catalogs yet, check out my earlier post on what they are and how to set them up here).

Give your Facebook followers an easy path from admiring your products in Facebook posts, to adding them to their shopping cart by making use of Facebook product tagging

As soon as you have an active Facebook Catalog you can start tagging products in your posts on Facebook, just as you can on Instagram. Image posts with tagged products show little clickable product tiles at the bottom of the post like the screenshot below.

If a user clicks on a product tile they’ll be taken strait to that product in your Madeit shop, where they can add it to their cart.

Note that tagging products in posts requires you to have a business page and the instructions below assume that you’ve already got this in place. If you’re just starting out and you don’t have one yet, here’s some instructions on how to create a Facebook business page.

Now, on with the how-to…

Tagging products in existing posts

1. Click on the … symbol in the top right corner of a post with images, and click ‘Edit Post’

2. Click on the Shopping bag icon as shown below

. Click the Shopping bag icon to tag products in an existing published Facebook post

3. Start typing the name or Madeit item number of the product you’d like to tag and then select your product from the list.

Start typing the product name or item number to find the product in your catalog

4. Select up to 30 products to tag in a post and save your changes

Tagging products in a new post

1. Create your post as normal, adding copy and images

2. Click on the Tag Products option below the post (you may need to click ‘more’ to show all options)

Click the Tage Product option when creating a new post

3. Start typing the product name or Madeit item number in the field provided to narrow down the list of products in your catalog and select the one you’d like to tag

Start typing the product name or item number to locate the product in your catalog

You can see the products you’ve tagged listed above the images of your post before publishing

4. Publish your post

Again, you can tag up to 30 products in a single post.

And that’s it! Now you can easily tag your products in your Facebook posts so when someone sees it and loves it… they can easily make the transition to your store to buy it!
